DIY Wallpaper Guide: How to Hang Paste-the-Wall Designs at Home
Thinking of hanging wallpaper yourself? Good news, with paste-the-wall wallpaper, it’s far more straightforward than you might expect. No need for tables, soaking, or panic. With a bit of preparation and the right tools, it’s surprisingly simple to do yourself and easy to install at home.
Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to apply wallpaper at home, plus some inspiration on where to use it – bathrooms, kitchens, or really any room you’d like…
What You’ll Need
Wallpaper, wallpaper paste (check the label to ensure it’s suitable), tape measure, sharp knife or scissors, decorator’s brush or smoother, sponge or soft cloth, ladder or step stool.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Prepare the Wall
Start with a clean surface. Remove old wallpaper, scrape off any leftover paste, and wipe down the wall. It needs to be dry, smooth, and free of dust or grease.
2. Measure and Cut
Measure the height of the wall and cut your first strip, adding a few extra centimetres at the top and bottom for trimming. If your design has a repeat pattern (as many of ours do), make sure to account for this when cutting additional strips.
3. Apply Paste to the Wall
Apply wallpaper paste directly to the wall using a roller or brush.
Tip: Leave a little extra paste at the top edge; it helps when securing the strip and trimming later.
4. Hang the Wallpaper
Working from the top down, press the wallpaper onto the pasted area, smoothing it into place with a decorator’s brush. Start from the centre and brush outwards to remove air bubbles.
5. Trim the Excess
Trim the top and bottom neatly with a sharp knife or scissors, using a straight edge if needed. Take care around sockets and corners.
6. Repeat
Line up the next strip, ensuring the pattern matches and the edges butt together (not overlapping). Repeat the process.
7. Clean Up
Wipe off any excess paste immediately with a damp sponge or cloth. Avoid using cleaning products – as they can damage the printing ink and the surface of the wallpaper.
Finishing Tips
A decorator’s brush is more forgiving than a smoother – it won’t drag or mark the paper.
Always use a sharp blade when trimming; blunt edges tear.
Work methodically: paste, hang, smooth, trim – then move on to the next section.
Allow the paper to settle overnight before assessing the final finish.
Love The Idea Of Wallpaper But Not Sure Where To Put It?
Every interior has its quirks – some are challenges, others opportunities. Wallpaper is a fantastic way to make the most of your space, no matter the shape or size.
One exciting trend in 2025 was the “fifth wall” – the ceiling. Using wallpaper on the ceiling creates a striking, immersive effect, especially when patterns flow seamlessly from walls to ceiling. It adds depth and personality, turning rooms into playful yet cohesive spaces when styled with intention.
Bathrooms are another space often overlooked but perfect for wallpaper. They can handle bold designs beautifully, bringing depth, softness, and visual interest to these smaller rooms. Wallpaper frames mirrors elegantly, catches the light, and adds a touch of boutique-hotel luxury, think of those powder rooms or vanity corners you’ve admired in design-led venues.
Top tip: all of our wallpapers are suitable for bathrooms; just apply three layers of decorator’s varnish to seal it, and voilà!
Cosy corners, alcoves, and tucked-away nooks are ideal spots to add wallpaper, too. The right pattern can transform these overlooked areas into standout features – whether it’s creating a home bar, a display for art and small treasures, or a reading nook with personality.
